Our Small Big World
The Basque Country is our passion and the number one inspiration for this blog. In this small “txoko” (corner) we intend to share with you every little (or big) thing that makes our hearts race and our stomachs flutter about this tiny region of the world we call home. We invite you to explore it and learn about it with us following our adventures in and throughout the Basque Country.
Named “Euskal Herria” in Basque, many would agree that it is difficult to make a geographic delimitation of the Basque Country. However, the origins and history of the Basque region go back to its ancient language (Euskera), and as the translation of “Euskal Herria” suggests, the Basque Country is the home of Basque-speaking people. Historically, then, the Basque Country encompasses the region where Basque has always been spoken: a region located between northern Spain and southwestern France, and hugged by the Bay of Biscay on the north, the Pyrenees Mountains on the east, and extensive Rioja vineyards on the south. Hence, the Basque Country crosses more than just geographical borders.
Besides this, it is also a region with a deep-rooted identity, an incredibly rich history and strong long-standing ancient traditions. And to top it all off, the Basque Country is renowned for its highly celebrated cuisine and breathtaking natural sceneries. All of this makes the Basque Country unlike any other place on earth.
So, what are we waiting for?
Let’s bask in Basque!
