For those of you in San Sebastian looking to visit another capital city of the Basque Country and buffing up on some Basque political history, this is an ideal easy-going tour for you.
We will begin the day by driving west from San Sebastian towards Bilbao to discover the city on foot. Following the path along the Nervion River, from the Guggenheim Museum to Bilbao’s Old Quarter, we will witness the urban transformation and regeneration of the city while making stops at the most iconic spots of the capital city of the province of Biscay.
After visiting Bilbao, we will head to the town of Guernica (Gernika), best known outside of the Basque region as the place where one of the first aerial bombings by Nazi Germany took place in 1937 in the context of the Spanish Civil War and immortalized by Pablo Picasso in his famous painting of the same name. The town is today a symbol of peace and the cradle of Basque identity. You will visit the General Assemblies of Biscay to discover the Tree of Gernika, an oak tree symbolizing the culture and history of Basque people.
